DNA-coded nanosensor device can smell skin cancer....still, dogs can still be trained for that, for cancer in general and you could treat yourself to holistic cancer cures.  And that teenager who developed a cheap cancer smelling kit and was featured on The Colbert Report awhile back--how's his multi-million dollar funding and marketing going?

We should use the easy, affordable stuff first...and use nanotechnology for things that shouldn't leave the lab and use the pre-cautionary principle....DDT, the Chemical, Genetic Modification and Atomic Age proved that one.

Futurescape with James Woods.

The new and recent TV series about the near(ish) future, fittingly called Futurescape does a good job imagining the spectrum of Utopia and Dystopia. It is surely a timely show, as we are heading toward some difficult realities that we may not be able to restrain ourselves from engaging. Will these breakthrough technologies at breakneck speeds break our world, by ushering in humans with bio-luminescent hair, glow-in the dark lipstick, bio-mechanical detachable penises or will it fall more towards the other end of the spectrum: the promises of near free energy, clean air and water for rich and poor alike? The age old curses versus blessings. The train lessened the need for horse-drawn caravans but the automobile lessened the train. Collectivism vs individualism. Can we find a non-violent balance? Can we not both have 'organic', natural food grown on natural and rich soil or will the future be about nanotoxins in our bodies and animal and plant food?


James Woods presents some possibilities of the good, the bad and ugly old future where scifi themes of like it or not extremes are presented. Because sometimes, only in the extremes can we see the balance.

30 New Startups for Waterloo-Wellington biotech, nanotech, quantum, singularity Region

VeloCity is a startup program with the University of Waterloo, and has announced 30 new startups this fall of 2013. The program fosters entrepreneurship by providing University of Waterloo students with opportunities for startup funding, free workspace, workshops, networking opportunities and access to mentors. The Waterloo-Wellington Region, which has traditionally been an area where Mennonites, maple syrup and farming, along with an undercurrent of holistic healing and organic lifestyles, is now home to businesses to the world famous Blackberry, along with Google and other such global tech firms. We are indeed headed into interesting times. In a land that was founded by German and Anglo-Scot Christian farming communities, the question is, will these groups equally contribute to the growing movement of technology singularity, or will they diverge into their respective extremist camps, spoiling the 'processed-icing-layer- on-organic-cake' of traditional and high-tech societies? Will the wisdom of traditional folk systems be paved over by faceless technology corporations whose employees (and perhaps employers too) forgot to eat fibre based on food, choosing nano-fibre instead, or will some of us become modern-Mennonite Cyborg farmers of the future, getting help from Android farmhands who 'themselves' left with the preacher's daughter? We are headed into interesting times indeed.
